Amazon Prime offers free shipping for a large flat fee. While my daughter was home from college for winter break, we found a big Amazon Prime charge when reviewing her finances.
I asked if she had purchased Prime. She said it was too expensive. She thought it might have been a free trial that auto-renewed. I warned her: never sign up for a free trial that requires you to remember to cancel, because most people forget and end up stuck paying for a subscription they can’t afford.
She tried to cancel online and the site said she couldn’t. I told her to call customer service and explain she hadn’t realized she was signing up and couldn’t afford the fee. It might not work, but you have to try.
She called, explained the situation, and Amazon refunded her money and credited her account. She was thrilled — and proud of how professionally she handled the request.
The takeaway: don’t give up. Keep asking for what you need; persistence often pays off.
Practical tip: get a notebook labeled “(your name) Personal Finance” and keep it by your computer. Use it to record goals, ideas, transactions, and plans.
