Money Magazine’s annual survey names Carmel, Indiana the best place to live in the U.S. I lived there in the 1990s, and I respectfully disagree. The lower cost of living compared to San Diego was about the only plus for us. The area was flat and dry, my allergies acted up constantly, and I had almost daily nosebleeds. It felt very conservative and racially segregated — I rarely saw people of color. If you prefer a flat, predominantly white, less expensive place, you might enjoy it, but it wasn’t a good fit for our family. To make matters worse, we lost money when we sold our home after moving.

Where do you think is the best place to live?
