Comfort in Shared Misery
I’m not miserable and I don’t have any real problems—just the small stresses and hassles that come with a cross-country move. We’re officially on the road with no address and no firm arrival date. We sold our house today, packed the cars and the cats, and began the journey.

Settlement brought a couple of unexpected headaches and the loss of a few hundred dollars, which was stressful. The realtor said last-minute issues at closings aren’t unusual, but this was new to us. The first problem was my fault: I thought the buyers didn’t want the refrigerator, so I sold it cheap on Craigslist. It turned out the contract said they did want it, so we had to cover the cost of a replacement at closing. I’m trying not to replay that mistake over and over—mistakes happen.

The second issue was a misunderstanding: we left some things we assumed the buyers wanted, but they didn’t. After a tense negotiation at the closing table, more money went out the door. Expect things to go off plan—they usually do. As they say in sports, “have a short memory,” and I’m working on it.

Tomorrow we head to a temporary stop at my parents’—they don’t have internet—but they’ve kindly agreed to let us stay until our short-sale purchase becomes available. I’ll keep you posted as our trip unfolds and appreciate your continued support and readership.
